Missed in this story is the fact that we crushed thousands of good used cars a couple of years ago. These cars would have been good used cars for folks for years to come. Another "unintended consequenses" episode of idiodic government at work.

Used-car prices on the rise

More people feel they can no longer delay replacing their old vehicles, driving up demand.

In the market for a used car? Kelley Blue Book urges you to buy sooner rather than later, as prices are rising.

Of course, it doesn't pay to be strong-armed into it, especially not if your current vehicle still has some life left in it. And it will make sense to consider your used-car choice carefully, as certain models command a premium.

KBB, a leading source of car-value data, says used-car prices are likely to rise by 3% to 5% in the first quarter of 2012, and even more in the second quarter. "Non-luxury cars and crossovers increased between $50 and $100 in the past week alone, and they will likely continue to rise in the weeks and months ahead," KBB reported last week.

Between Jan. 6 and Jan. 13, the average trade-in value of a 2009-2011 midsized car increased $107, from $12,096 to $12,203, or 0.9%. Most other types of cars that age gained 0.5% to 0.6% that week. A 5% increase in the coming months would raise the price of a $12,000 car to $12,600 -- and that's serious money for budget-conscious Americans.

Credit goes to unusual market conditions. Supply has been tightened by a slowdown in lease returns, a key source of used vehicles, while at the same time the average age of cars on the road is going up as drivers postpone purchases in the weak economy. Now more people feel they can delay no longer, driving up demand. Post continues below.

Here's the difference, money made of metal worth something:

1909-1982 penny, made of copper (hence the name "copper penny") is worth .02 cents.

Apparently (link here), congressmen cannot wish their constituents "Merry Christmas" in tax payer funded mailings to their districts.

I say, SO WHAT? They shouldn't have franking privileges to begin with.

It's a massive waste of money. It's a way to keep their name ID up and help with their reelections.

There is no need for this in the age of emails/internet/facebook/twitter/etc....

My Representative just sent a post card telling us he supports the 2nd amendment. Um....that's his job! He took an oath to uphold the Constitution and the right to bear arms was the 2nd amendment to this Constitution.

Complete waste of tax money. It doesn't matter what party one affiliates himself with....Wilson did this and now Johnson is,.....it's a waste of money.

Stuff that deficits are made of.

Paper money is made of..........paper. Completely worthless

the penny is made of 97.5% zinc and is worth $0.005

the dime is made of nickel and copper and is worth $0.02

the quarter is made of nickel and copper is is worth $0.06

The only coin made in the US that is worth anything (when I say "worth" I mean it's made out of something worth something, in case that wasn't obvious) is the Nickel.

The Nickel is made of mostly copper and a higher percentage of nickel than the quarter and dime. It is worth $0.06

Maybe it's just me, but I think money should be worth something. This way the government can't just print / make funny money out of thin air. Seems criminal to me. Gov. Perry is correct that it is treasonous.

We need to attach our money to something valuable. Like gold and silver. Look at the inflation we've had since Pres. Nixon disassociated our money from Gold!

Now, the government is whining that it actually costs money to coin the nickel. It should cost money! Our money should be worth something.

It's time to start hording nickels. They are about to go the way of the pre-64 silver quarters and dimes.

That comment was not explained, but appeared targeted at Kevin DeWine, chairman of the Ohio Republican Party, who gave Blackwell's potential candidacy a chilly reception when Blackwell told The Dispatch in April that he was thinking about running."

DeWine is not and doesn't care for real conservatives running for office. Conservatives that will actually be a conservative after they are elected, not just during the campaign.

"Blackwell, who lost the 2006 governor's race to Democrat Ted Strickland by almost 24 points, said that after serving as Cincinnati mayor, Ohio treasurer and secretary of state, he would "much prefer an executive office over a legislative office.""

Blackwell lost because the GOP establishment abandoned him and had to have actually voted for Strickland. They mouth the politially correct words "diversity" but only really want it when candidates toe the moderate GOP party line. I don't believe the Ohio GOP is racist, they are anti-conservative, no matter what color you are.

I don't agree with Blackwell that this has to be a 2 term commitment. When that happens, the first term is spent campaigning and raising money for the 2nd term....more so than actually being a good conservative Senator. Maybe that's why I can't remember one of them (Ohio conservative US Senator) in my life time. Think John Glenn (D)and George Voinovich (so called R), it's a hard call as to who was the more conservative.

He's right, the GOP makes promises, innuendos and platitudes toward conservatives every election year. No action has resulted until Kasich.....which are few and too timid. Use them (conservatives) to campaign then ignore their requests after being elected.

If that isn't a good enough reason to support former state Sen. Kevin Coughlin, I don't know what is. When the Ohio GOP establishment starts endorsing candidates before the primary (bad practice btw, let the voters decide........proof that they don't trust the GOP voters to make decisions) it's a good time to support the exact opposite.

The this do nothing label is thrown around by both parties against former / current general assembly members that run for office. Let see, would I rather have an activist state Senator/Representative who probably doesn't think through the ramifications of his votes (unintended consequences) or someone that is slow and thoughtful about important issues and isn't the first to jump on all the band wagons rolling down Broad St?

Some thoughts about the union protests in Wisconson and Ohio.

Strickland is using up what little good will he had with the public when he left office. He was defeated and he is no longer Governor. Yet he insists in getting into bed with the public employee unions and obama's brown shirts.
Wisconson's protests prove the conservative's points. They are teachers who have called off sick. Who, in the real world, would call of work sick and then go in front of TV cameras and protest the same people that gave them the very generous sick time to begin with? In the private sector, these folks would be fired. These people have no fear of being fired or even disciplined for lying to their employer, the tax payers. This is exactly the type of entitlement attitude that the public is fed up with.
Here we have a bunch of tax payer funded "Doctors" handing out fake "sick notes" to tax payer funded employees who are gaming the sick day system.

Governments don't allow cockfighting

I'm beginning to think that one reason that the state governments don't like cockfighting is the fact that since these dumb people gamble on the bird fights, they then don't have that money to gamble in the state sanctioned vice called the Lottery.

So, it's OK:

For the state to run a gambling racket, but not you.
For the state to kill your roosters, but you can't let them fight each other, because it might harm them.

I remember in Vinton County in May 1991 where 730 or so roosters were stolen (by the state) from their rightful owners for this same reason. Judge Brame, at first, rule that the roosters were to by "humanely euthanized", he rescinded that ruling before it could be carried out.

People take their cockfighting serious. It wasn't very long after this that someone left a lit candle in Brame's house and turned the gas to the cook stove on. The candle burned out before the gas could ignite. No one really knows if this had anything to do with the game bird case. I don't think any arrests were every made.

ORL is AWOL

Here we finally have a proposal with real teeth in it concerning the limiting of killing babies in Ohio.......and the Ohio Right to Life does not support it.

Makes no sense. The ORL would, apparently, rather tap dance around this issue with little tweaks to rules. Then, of course, blow and bleat like they've really accomplished something.

Here we have a real proposal that will save lives, yes, that is what we are talking about, saving lives, and the ORL is AWOL. The reasoning is that a court might overturn the law. (which is the court's job, in case you didn't realize, overturning the will of the people)

John Hancock signed the Declaration of Independence (along with many others) and it was treason. George Washington accepted the generalship of the Continental Army, even though it was against the law to take up arms against the mother land.

Yet the Ohio Right to Life can't even offer a word of support for this bill, just because it MIGHT be over turned in court.

Not that I think that the government should do anything about the price of gas. What they should do is quit hindering drilling, which actually raises the price of fuel.

Here Thomoas Suddes suggests that Ohio Constitutional changes might be in order. While I don't agree with change just for change's sake, Suddes has one good argument.

Rid ourselves of our self imposed term limits on House and Senate members. He says: "First and foremost would be repeal of General Assembly term limits, which curse Ohio with a legislature always looking for its next job rather than finishing the job at hand." I think the larger reason would be that the voters can't vote for who they want. The voters should decide a term limit on the elected member's merits by voting intelligently. However, since the voters know they can't / don't / won't vote intelligently, they limited themselves with term limits. Seems rather childish to me.

Here's an idea for the voters that don't trust themselves to make the correct choices when voting.........don't vote!

Here, Jim Phillips thinks it is a big deal for law enforcement to fake evidence. I do too. I'm not sure why Sheriff Kelley insists on employing this individual.

The US government (Federal Reserve) is really smart.

OK, They are really devious and dishonest.

Here is a story of the Indian Government arresting a smart man. His crime? Melting some of his own currency, yes, he owned it....even if it was issued by his government.

The reason he was melting it is because it is worth more as pure silver than the face value of the coin.

Back to the comment about our government being dishonest and devious. They quit making coins with silver in 1964 (90%) and 1969 (40%).

So, our money is absolutely worthless. It's made of nothing. Our coins are made of junk metals that are worth much less than the face value of the coin. How is this honest?

Ohio Chamber of Commerce advocates raising taxes

The Ohio Chamber of Commerce has released a report on how Ohio can start digging it's way out of it's budget mess.

One item I disagree with is the suggestion of the elimination of the real estate rollback. This was implemented in the early 70's to help "sell" the income tax. (never trust your government).

(The Chamber is playing a Chameleon again. Depending on the subject............they either say we are massively overtaxed (which I agree with) or now, we are "giving money to taxpayers", propaganda Lenin would be proud of)

Now the Chamber thinks it's a costly entitlement given to tax payers! This sounds just like a press release from the obama administration.

They also float the idea of "means testing" the real estate rollback based on the value of the property. Again, never trust your government. They know that over time inflation will make whatever number they come up with meaningless.

The part of the report I do agree with is consolidation of local governments. They talk all around the idea but they get there. I wish they'd be even more bold and suggest the elimination of Townships. It doesn't matter if the cost only equals whatever percentage of the upcoming shortfall. If Townships are wasteful and not needed, they need to go!

Sheriff Pat Kelly hired a felon as an "Environmental Officer".

The need for an "environmental officer" is dubious anyway. That's what the OEPA and Mike Cooper at the Athens County Health Department's job is already.

So, 2 issues:

1. Our top law enforcement officer should not be hiring felons, no matter if it's a law enforcement job or not. There are many law abiding folks that don't have felonies that could use a job.
2. It certainly looks like this fellow was impersonating an officer. When will he be charged with that crime? He's wearing a shirt that says "Deputy Jay Barrett". He signs official paperwork "Deputy Jay Barrett". Yet he is not a police officer. Looks like an open and shut case. That is, if someone chooses to enforce the law.
3. Don't we have more important things to worry about than a private citizen burning a tire on his own private property?

Looks like a position that is funded via some grant. We really get ourselves into dumb positions by agreeing to take grant money.

Our Sheriff needs to worry about real crimes in this county, like theft and robbery, rather than someone using a tire to burn brush with.

Increase instruction days for Ohio's schools without lengthening the school year

Here's how:

1. Cancel spring break.
2. Cancel training time for teachers during the school week which usually reduces instruction time by 2 hours on those days.. They could do their training:

during the summer.
before the school day begins.
after the school day is over.
on a Saturday.

3. Only take 3 Holidays during the school year. This means days, no 4 day weekends.

December 25th, IF it is during the week. Don't take Thursday and Friday off if the 25th is on Saturday or Sunday. This also means that you go back to work / school after the 25th. No more week breaks between the 25th and the 1st of January. Yes, go to school on the 1st of January.
Thanksgiving is on a Thursday. Take Thursday off and get back to work on Friday.
Good Friday, take it off, but as stated above, no "spring break". They'll soon have a summer vacation.

This would add 2.5 - 3 weeks of instruction time without lengthening the school year. One of Strickland's objectives was to go to 200 days of instruction. He could have proposed the above plan, but I suspect that his union thug supporters would not like it.

We need to attach our money to some sort of standard (gold, silver, basket of commodities, etc). This way, the politicians, can't print their way out of debt......causing inflation. Decreasing the value of your money (inflation) while paying off debts with the same currency is stealing.

Like I've said in the past, the NRA loses credibility when it does not look at the big picture with it's endorsements.

Just got a post card and my "American Rifleman" magazine from the NRA.

The Rob Portman and Ted Strickland endorsements make sense. However, the Charlie Wilson endorsement does not.

Portman is running against one of the biggest anti-gun democrat ever. Lee Fisher was actually on Handgun Control Inc's board.

Strickland is and has been pro-gun since his first stint in Congress. He has not changed his position. Kasich voted to ban semi-automatic guns. so, this endorsement also makes sense.

The Charlie Wilson endorsement is the one I have an issue with. Yes, Charlie has not voted to restrict our 2nd amendment rights. However, he does vote for and support other democrats that do. For instance, he votes to have Nancy Pelosi as the Speaker of the House. She is an anti-gun freak from San Fransisco. How is that helping the NRA's mission?

Bill Johnson (running against Wilson) is also pro-gun. There should be no endorsement in this race. The policy of supporting and campaigning for pro-gun incumbents, against other pro-gun candidates is a waste of time and is surely a waste of money. Since, in these cases, no matter who wins, the NRA gets a gun friendly congressman.

Now, an appointed un-elected, judge overthrows the will of the people. A "judge" has decided, on his own, to disregard the view of the majority of the voters of California. He also, more importantly to me, wadded up their Constitution and threw it in the trash. If one section can be overturned by an idiot in a robe the entire document means nothing.

Lack of knowing what the laws / rules are lead to anarchy.

Disregarding the expressed will of the people and overturning written law has led to revolutions in the past. If the government can't abide by the rules, maybe it's time for some Jeffersonian revolution again.

Why is it that Chevy, Dodge or Ford have to have a tough guy sell their tucks? They always have someone with a very deep voice talking about "guy" stuff. (whatever happened to the word "men" btw?, "guy" seems rather French to me).

Why can't they just say, this is how much this truck will pull or haul, this is the tire sizes available and here are the different engine options?

They have to show a picture of a crane dropping a load into the back of a truck fro 20 feet up. Like this is what we do in the real world.

Or we have Craftsman trying to sell us tools. Do they really think we are gullible enough to put up with some male model (who is prettier than most women) turning a bolt or nut the wrong way in a commercial and think that this will make us want to buy a tool from them?

Now we have soap commercials for men. Unbelievable. We now have our own special soap. I still can't get over men who wear cologne. Apparently some advertising campaign in the past got some men past the normal revulsion of wearing perfume like a woman.

My point is, these advertisements must work.........even if the do offend those that mostly use these products. Disregard the male perfume for this last sentence.

This brings me to my main point. Comrade Charlie Wilson.

The deficit spending, debt increasing 6th District mistake of a Congressman.

He just sent out an email to subscribers telling us that he is worried about our national debt. The debt that he voted into existence, no less.

I'm afraid we'll fall for this deception for two reasons.

We've proven that we will fall for anything, as described above
No one pays attention to the actions of politicians. We listen to their slick words. They are usually divergent.

Here's his words on the deficit that he has saddled us and our children with:

I share the concerns that many Americans have about our country’s financial future. With escalating spending and a growing national debt, there is a legitimate concern about how we begin to correct our economic course. I take tackling our debt very seriously, and I know you do too. Here's what you can do Charlie. Resign now. You created this debt and now you want to pretend to fix it to help your re-election chances.

Just back from West Virginia

Took the girls and boy for a week long trip to West Virginia this week. Some thoughts from our 65 deg low humidity vacation.

West Virginia is truly almost heaven. The weather, the temperature, the scenery, etc.
Surprise (not really): Joe Manchin (the current democrat Governor) is going to run for the US Senate. He appointed an assistant to Sen Rockerfeller to Byrd's seat. Then Manchin announced 12 days later that he will run for this seat this fall. Still seems more unseemly to do this than for Manchin to just appoint himself to the seat and get it over with. I'd have a hard time not voting for Manchin, even if his is a democrat. He will definitely fight for coal. Byrd was caving on this issue. Actually, he was getting a little out there on many issues.
Cass railroad is just as cool now as it's always been. I'm still not sure how they keep the old steam engines from overpressuring and blowing up without relief valves.
Seems like every bridge, road and building is named after Robert C. Byrd. There are still a few still named after A James Manchin and Jennings Randolph. but they are getting fewer as the reality of the "what have you done for me lately" politics takes hold more firmly in our mob rule democracy. It's as if Byrd personally paid for all these projects out of his own pocket. Of course, if you named a bridge "Taxpayer's bridge" how does that help you get reelected?
Dolly Sods is the best place in the entire state. Don't, however, travel this with just passenger car tires. One should have puncture resistant tires (or at least 6 ply tires) as the gravel is sharp. We punctured a left front tire. And, of course, the spare had very low air pressure. So for the 5-7 mile trip down the mountain we drove no faster than 5mph. With the low tire on the front we where dragging in the middle when we went over large boulders. I was really concerned with puncturing the oil pan and losing the oil out of the engine and then was worried about how we were going to travel on a real road with very low air pressure in the left front and having no spare. The girls were loving it. Got to the bottom of the mountain and stopped at the first house. They were sitting on the front porch (you see a lot of that in WV) and told us to use their air compressor to add air to the spare. They then directed us to a service station 3 miles down the road. I told them that it was 6:30 in the evening and that it would be closed. They told me that the owner lives there and will open for me. They were right. The owner plugged the punctured tire and we were able to put it on the car. He tried to charge me $3 and argued when I told him to keep the change from the $5 bill I gave him. This is why I love WV.
Absurdity of the Federal Government: While we were at the service station, my son asked the owner's wife if the station had a restroom. She told him no. but when she over heard the little girls need to go "potty" she showed them where to go. The absurdity part of this story is: the federal government (thanks to George HW Bush) requires businesses, if they have a restroom to conform to the "Americans with Disabilities Act" by making all restrooms wheel chair accessible. However, if they don't have a public restroom, they don't have to comply with this law............because they don't have a public restroom. So, if you ask if you can use a restroom, you'll be told no....even though they have one.......but it's not a "public" restroom. This is something only our Federal Government or the East German Stasi could think up!
Why is it that a 1987 Buick Century with a 4 cylinder engine has plenty of power for the mountains of WV and still gets 31mpg on the highway...........yet we now have (in 2010) car manufacturers bragging about their new cars getting (get this) 31 mpg on the highway. If they could do this 23 years ago............is the American buying public so stupid they can fall for this non improvement in gas mileage.........and have the manufactures tell you it's a selling point?
All of West Virginia has about 1.8 million residents, about the same as the Columbus metro area. If you don't like to be around people, this is the place.......along with North Dakota.
Paula Dilley's Cottage was a great place to stay. Close to Cass and within reasonable driving distance of Spruce Knob, Canaan valley, Blackwater falls, Dolly Sods wilderness area and great trout fishing areas. Durbin (where her Cottage is located) is a nice little town in itself. Here's her website.

Having said all that, it's always good to get back to southeastern Ohio.....with it's Ohio river driven 98% humidity and 95 deg days.

I've always thought this guy was a little loony, but this proves it.

He thinks it's wrong for people to keep their own money? He actually wants to make a campaign issue of this? How dumb are his advisors?

Ohio is the 47th highest taxes state in the nation. 1 being good. 50 being bad (unless your a democrat).

Mr. Strickland thinks your only a good Ohioan if you give him your money. So he, in turn, can give your money to more government leeches....

Didn't we fight (and win) a war over high taxes? (lower, BTW, than they are today).

Yet Strickland thinks it makes good political sense to bash those that don't want to pay taxes on death to the state and would rather give it to their children?

He thinks this is a winning issue? This guy is crazy!

Here's the winning quote: "Strickland said he found that comment revealing and disturbing, noting that Ohioans who grow up in the state and start successful businesses here benefit from the state's advantages."

So, because of this we have to pay up, just like the Mafioso? The state has many benefits in spite of the government, not because of it.

We need a governor that understands that people will move to locales that steal less of their money than Ohio does. Ohio has to compete with the Florida's and Texas' of this union or we'll keep losing good people to those states. This is not rocket science.

Mr. Strickland does not get it.

OFB's cave to the "humane society"

Isn't it a shame to see the Ohio Farm Bureau cave into the "Humane Society". Especially after winning last fall's ballot initiative to create an "Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board".

I thought that board was going to take care of all our upcoming issues? Especially since the board has the "humane society" on the board.

So, the OFB and others supported last fall's ballot initiative to create this board. The thought process was, that by creating this board, the issues would be handled by the board.

However, the initiative did not stop anyone from taking issues directly to the voters. So, what is the point of the board?

Then when the so called "humane society" threatens again to take livestock "care" issues to the voters, the OFB caves.

What is the old saying?..."with friends like these, who needs enemies?"

Makes one wonder if the Ohio Farmer's Bureau went ahead and put the "humane society" on their board. They are acting like it.

Mr. Strickland is trying to play both sides here. But just because he has his picture taken with OFB's vice president, in no way makes him a friend of farmers.

Manchin and mob rule democracy

Why is it that Governors are afraid to follow the intent of the founders when they have a chance. Gov. Manchin had every right to appoint a replacement for Robert Byrd. That appointment would have been good to 2012.

What's wrong with that? He could have appointed himself. He'd be a great Senator.

The States governments should have more representation in Washington. The 17th amendment (which allowed direct election of US Senators) was and is nothing but a step towards mob rule.

When people can vote for whoever promises more goodies....this is how we got into the position we are now.

This is what kept Robert Byrd in office so long.

The 17th amendment needs repealed. The State Governments should appoint US Senators. We would not be in the mess we are now if we had somebody looking out for state's rights.

On another note, Joe Manchin vs. Shelley Moore Capito....not sure how I'd vote if I lived in WV. Joe Manchin is not your typical limp wristed democrat.

Thanks to President Bush (via his legacy, Supreme Court Justice nominees) the Supreme Court decided that we actually do have a right to self defense.

Athens "farmer's market" and WIC

Here's an Athens News story about the Athens "farmer's market".

Lot's of quotes from local officials bragging about it, etc.... same old stuff.

"This summer, the Athens Farmers Market is using grant funding that will allow area residents who receive Food Assistance benefits to receive even more fresh fruits and vegetables at the market.

“The Food Assistance Program is wonderful,” Jack Cantrell, president of the Athens Farmers Market, said in the release. “We are having more and more participants all the time.”

In 2009, area residents spent about $21,000 in Food Assistance benefits on fresh fruits and vegetables at the Athens Farmers Market. This accounted for nearly half of all of the Food Assistance benefits used at farmers’ markets across the state.

“We are proud that we have such a group that works together to help people out in southeast Ohio. It’s just a good example of how by working together we can make things better for everybody,” Athens County Commissioner Lenny Eliason said in the release.

“I think it’s a win-win for everyone involved,” added County Commissioner Larry Payne who is a past president of the Farmers Market. “The Farmers Market has a history of providing fresh fruits and vegetables for people in our area. With this partnership, it allows people with lower incomes to have access to these products that they may not have had on their own. It’s just a great program.”"

Larry has one thing right, its a "win-win", just not for everyone.

It's a win for the hippies selling stuff.
It's a win for those receiving free taxpayer money to buy products from the hippies.

However its a "lose" for the taxpayers. Taking money from people that work and giving it to people that don't.

I wonder if any of these local officials, or The Athens News for that matter, have ever wondered why prices are higher when the WIC coupons are handed out...........on sight....believe it or not.

Some "farmers" actually have two prices for the same product side by side. Higher prices for those paying with WIC coupons and lower prices for those paying cash.

Other "farmers" just have one set of higher prices during the time frame that the WIC coupons are in effect.

So, it looks to me that the taxpayers are getting hosed with this grand scheme. Yet our local officials all think it's great.

How does this make any sense?

The democrats will stop at nothing, turn over every rock, looking for different ways to steal money from you.

Here they are trying to increase taxes on homebuilders. Which, of course, means the costs for building houses, or any other construction work, will rise.

Who pays this increase? (I feel the obligation to connect the dots for really slow democrats) The home buyer. So much for democrats wanting affordable housing.

Then we'll put more people out of work, which of course justifies more spending (according to government) because we have an increased (government caused) need.

On another note, this is the first time I've been disappointed with Cordray. I was actually thinking about voting for him (can't vote for RINO DeWine). I hope this isn't a habit of Cordray's, that is, to act like a liberal.

Of course, when / if this bill gets to the house, I'm positive this it is socialist enough for Comrade Charlie Wilson to support.

Weirdness at Federal Hocking's graduation

One of the girls graduated yesterday. Attached to her diploma was something that was strange to me, as I've never seen anything like this before. Maybe this happens all the time, but I've never seen it before.

It was a letter from our State Representative Debbie Phillips. I didn't find it odd that Debbie Phillips would want to hand out "congrats" letters to all the graduates. It makes good political sense to congratulate them, especially since they are all, now, voting age.

What I found odd was that the school would do her bidding for her.

Then, I remembered that George Wood (the high school principal who handed out the actual diplomas attached to this letter after the ceremony was over) is (or at least was) a member of the Athens County democrat Central Committee.

Makes me wonder of Jimmy Stewart (our State Senator who happens to be a Republican) was offered the same deal as Debbie?

I've been around Athens County too long not to think something fishy is going on. Maybe not??

Then, once you get to the letter itself, you realize that Debbie doesn't do herself any good when she refers to the graduates in the manner that she does. Or, more importantly, how the graduates interpret the tone of her letter.

Here it is, the phrase that really turns off the young ladies that I'm sure she feels are her voters anyway.

"Being from Southeastern Ohio, you have confronted challenges, etc........"

So, the implication is, you are really dumb, you're a hillbilly from Appalachia and it's a real achievement that you even graduated........you know.

More than one of my daughter's friends noticed this slight of hand in this letter.

I know the young people around here don't like being labeled as stupid and needing "help" just because of where they live geographically in Ohio. They see this labeling as nothing more than Bolshevik's trying to get more tax money for their socialist programs.

Here's a message to the label making politicians:

We have high speed Internet already, we don't need your help. If you'd get out of the way, private businesses would have had DSL to all the folks in SE Ohio by now.
We have and know how to use cell phones.
We even have color TV!

We don't need or want your "help". But if Debbie Phillips wants to continue to insult our young people, that's OK with me, she's just helping the GOP candidate for the 92nd district.

Athens County Sheriff Office move

We currently have new property between Canaanville and Athens that is owned by the county. The County Engineer is using part of it. Why not move the Sheriff's office there?
Hockingport and Torch are currently the farthest away from our Sheriff's office. Now we want to move our Sheriff's office even further away, to The Plains? Why, when we could move the Sheriff's office to a more central locale that is already owned by the county?
I'm disappointed in Mark Sullivan suggesting a temporary sales tax increase. Right now, when people need to keep their money the most.
Don't ever trust the government when they want to "temporarily" raise the sales tax. If the county is anything like the state government, when it's time for the "temporary" sales tax to end, they'll just cut it in half and tell you that you just got a tax cut.
I'm glad Lenny is against a sales tax. However, what does he think issuing a bond does? It's borrowing money and then we have to repay it. The payments with interest take money away from other priorities. Sometimes, the shortages caused by having to repay bonds are excuses to raise taxes. Which, if we were not repaying our bonds, we'd have the money to begin with. Here's an idea, if we see a cost / need coming in the future, why don't we start setting aside money now to pay for this future need. Instead of running to lenders every time we "need" something.
Larry Payne gets it. Now is not the time to raise taxes. The only thing I'd add is, there is never a good time or reason to raise taxes. the less government we have, the better we are. One way to force less government is not feeding it.

On Sunday, March 21, 2010, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 219 to 212 to pass H.R. 3590, the pro-abortion Senate Health Care bill. Ohio's new fence laws. Unintended consequences again.

Just read my latest copy of "The Ohio Woodland Journal".

There is a story (Is New Timber Trespass Legislation on the Horizon in Ohio) about State Representative Ross McGregor working on (among other issues) logging issues around people knowing where they are and whose property they are on when removing timber.

This brings me to the unintended consequences part:

We had a property line fence law in Ohio that worked for many years. It simply required one to establish a fence around your property. You and your neighbor shared in this cost. This forced us to know where our property lines were. It also forced neighbors to agree (one way or the other) where the property line was.

There was some complaining about the law. Mostly from folks that moved here from another state or folks that moved out of town into the rural areas of the state. One of the arguments against the old law was that it wasn't fair for someone that didn't own livestock to have to build a fence around their property.

My contention is and was that it is always fair when the rules apply to everyone and the rules are known before one purchases property that is affected by the rules.

One of the main problems with the old law was lack of enforcement. Having Township Trustees required to hold hearing on fence line disputes was a recipe for absolutely no action. They are too worried about getting reelected and keeping their OPERS to force the required actions of the law onto their neighbors.

One more reason Townships need abolished in Ohio. (seeds for another post)

Basically, the old line fence law said you shall build a fence. The new line fence law says you may build one if you wish. The new law (of course) has a very complicated set of rules.

So, back to Rep. McGregor and his Timber Trespass legislation.

Some of the fixes he suggested included requiring an expensive survey before any logging operations commence.

If we would have left our line fence law as it was, all we would have to do the address the logging trespass issue is to enforce the law.

Which leads me to continue to believe that our government spends a lot of time fixing the problems that they themselves cause by trying to fix another perceived problem....all without considering the untended consequences of their actions.

Charlie Wilson: Who's to blame for this pro-abortion "health care bill"??

When he votes for this bill, he will "own it" just as much as barry does.

All he has to do is vote no. But he won't. He's tied at the hip with our embarrassment in chief to grow a back bone of his own and vote to protect his district from this monstrous, debt increasing, states rights infringing, baby killing bill.

Charlie Wilson is no "conservative pro-life democrat". He will vote exactly like Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco.

He will be voting to use your tax money to kill babies. What has our country come to when our representative can justify killing innocent babies because he thinks this bill has some good things in it. I say "he thinks" because he hasn't read it. No one has had time to read it. Yet, he'll vote for it.

He is going to vote for a bill that is unconstitutional. No where is this allowed in the constitution. The 10th Amendment specifically denies it. He swore to uphold the constitution, yet he is going to lie to us with this one vote.

He is going to force young people to pay thousands for health insurance, even though this is one group that does not need it. It's a choice that needs left up to individuals, not government. Then if folks don't get insurance, they'll pay a fine. The fine will be small enough that many will just pay the fine rather than the thousands for the privilege of being in a government run health care system. Then, when these people that don't get insurance do get sick, they can just start paying premiums and get their sickness taken care of. No insurance will be able to deny them insurance due to the law (Wilson will vote for) which will not let people with "pre-existing" conditions be denied insurance. HMM... this is going to save money how???

I could go on. This can be summed up with this: Bad bill + horrible representation = bad law.

It's related to Idaho passing a bill directing their Attorney General to sue the Federal Government when / if "health care" is passed.

This is the sentence that really proves that the media have no clue about our government or our Constitution.

Two thoughts:

You don't have to be a "constitutional law expert" (whatever that is) to know that the federal government only have specified (in the constitution) powers. If they are not specified in the constitution (see 10th amendment) they have no power over the states. (of course the states let themselves be rolled by the feds because the fed can print their own money and bride states to go along with dumb and totalitarian ideas.
Anyone can hire an "expert" on any subject with any view point you want to pay for.

$600,000 for solar panels in Athens. What I'd really like to know is, how long will it take for these solar panels to pay back this $600,000? And, even if it paid off the day after they are installed, what section of the US Constitution grants the federal government the right to use our money in this manner?

Wouldn't it be better (of course it would) to just let us all keep our own money and we'll create a free economy without government boondoggles like this?

Of course, our congressman would not have anything to brag about if we just took care of ourselves, would he?

One more thing Comrade Wilson. Printing money and throwing it around is not at all helpful. Not even in the short run. Printing more money just devalues the dollar by the same amount printed. There is no new value added. Just more...less valued paper money. At the end of the day, nothing is accomplished except to wreck our currency by your huge debt.

One more thing in addition to the last one more thing: Do you know what "renovate 60 units of affordable housing" means. It means it's not yours. We are going to confiscate money from you and give it to someone that meets some sort of arbitrary government induced and invented threshold. It all comes down to using your money to give to folks that will vote for democrats. In other words, vote buying.

Finally, According to the Ohio Finance Agency, the State of Ohio is set to receive $13 million dollars in Recovery Act funds to build and improve existing affordable housing units. Within Ohio’s Sixth District, Plains Plaza in Athens County will be awarded $2,013,934 in Tax Credit Exchange (TCE) financing to rehabilitate 60 units of affordable housing.

One more example of why you should never trust the government. Promising to reduce tax rates after raising them somewhere else.

However the reduction part is incremental over time. That's pretty handy when a government made "crisis" evolves and we "need" more of your money. We just won't give you the tax cut we promised.

Never trust the government when they tell you they'll cut your taxes over time. They lie. Even if they keep their word (laughing), the money is artificially inflated by same government, making it worth less.

Yes, I know that the CAT tax had to be incremental due to loss of funding if we just "gave" all the tax money back to the people all at once. Right. Here's the reason why governments make tax cuts gradual over time. So your attention will be elsewhere when they cut the promised tax cutting short.

I've spent most of today in the woods hunting. I've noticed, over the last 5 years, a real reduction in shots fired during gun season.

Why? There are more deer than ever. Just look at front end of many SE Ohio resident's cars and see how many deer are hit every year. We can't even get our vehicles completely repaired before we damage it again by hitting another deer.

So, back to the lack of shots heard......this logically results from a lack of hunters.

And again I asked WHY?

I'm going to toss out a theory and someone can disagree and (hopefully) prove me wrong.

The men of Ohio have turned feminine. They want to talk about all they can do while in a warm restaurant drinking warm coffee (with cream and sugar, of course).

Let me give this guy a little advice. Wives only think it's cute for you to lay around and hold babies and puppies for a little while. Pretty soon, they really do want you to act like a man, not a nanny.

The only hunting they do is for the remote. Then, they might watch a hunting show if they don't find Will & Grace first.

RECENT LIMITATIONS ON MAMMOGRAMS PROVIDE GLIMPSE INTO THE NEXT STEP FOR ZACK SPACE'S GOVERNMENT HEALTH CARE PROGRAM

The Titanic is steaming ahead and the iceberg is in sight. Will we ignore the warning signs and pretend the collision won't do much damage?

The Titanic in this case is the $1.3 trillion government health care program passed this month with the support of our liberal Democrat congressman, Zack Space. Space's program will increase the role of the federal government in your day-to-day life. The iceberg is the massive power transferred to bureaucrats who will eventually determine what medical services we can get. Like the tip of an iceberg, Space's program doesn't look scary at first glance, but the danger runs far.

This week, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force, which included no cancer specialists, issued a report recommending that long-time guidelines for breast cancer screening be reversed. They said most women under 50 shouldn't have a mammogram, thus eliminating the use of the best tool we have to detect breast cancer in its beginning stages. The panel then told women age 50 to 74 to only get mammograms every other year, instead of every year. The panel also determined that there's no cost benefit for elderly women to have mammograms at all.

The cruel irony of this heartless decision being announced this week was made clear by the passing of Stefanie Spielman. Stefanie raged a courageous battle against breast cancer for more than a decade, while raising awareness and millions of dollars for research to find a cure. Sadly, Stefanie left her husband, Ohio State football standout Chris Spielman, to raise their four children alone.

Like most Ohioans, my own life has been touch by the struggles and losses caused by breast cancer. I'm thankful that my aunt is a survivor but have also experienced the devastating loss of one of my best friends and another aunt.

What's most troubling about the federal panel's recommendations is that they are based mainly on cost saving. This is a harbinger of things to come, given Zack Space's support of the controversial legislation that will invite federal bureaucrats to use similar cost-saving measures to affect your family's health care.

Zack Space and his liberal Democrat cohorts in Washington say they want to provide more health coverage to millions of Americans, a worthy goal if only there were money available to pay for it. Because the federal government doesn't have that money, panels like the one reducing mammograms will undoubtedly try to cut costs by limiting other medical procedures.

Congresswoman Candice Miller of Michigan noted that when cost is considered, the question becomes "why have all these mammograms because it is very costly, they could test 2,000 women and only one is positive. I guess it doesn't matter. If you're the one, it matters." Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee went further, pointing out "This is how rationing begins...and this is where we start getting a bureaucrat between you and your physician."

James Thrall, a Harvard medical professor and chairman of the American College of Radiology said, "I fear we are entering an era of deliberate decisions where we choose to trade people's lives for money."

And if you don't think the Zack Space government health program will lead to a complete government takeover of healthcare, you need only to recall the promise made by Zack Space's friend and ally, Barack Obama. Speaking to the labor union AFL-CIO in 2003, Mr. Obama said "I happen to be a proponent of a single-payer universal health care program ... a single-payer health care plan, a universal health care plan. And that's what I'd like to see. But as all of you know, we may not get there immediately. Because first we have to take back the White House, we have to take back the Senate, and we have to take back the House."

What kind of a sick world will this become when the government starts making these choices for us?

Yep, we should worry about a backlash. The Muslims are engaged in a war against this country and we want to be careful not to get them upset.

They've flew airplanes full of people into buildings full of people, they cut off heads, they walk into crowds and detonate explosives, they enlist in our armed forces and kill our soldiers from the inside.

Yet, we don't want to upset them.

It's time we kicked them out, back to their beach front property in Arabia.......just like the Spanish did the Muslim Moors. Spain finally got to the point where they worried about their own country and religion more than the feelings of those killing them.

Of course, it's hard to do this when our country's president is a muslim as well. We shouldn't expect any tough actions against this satanic religion while we have an ardent in office.
